OUR STORY

WishGarden Herbs was started in Boulder, Colorado in 1979 by Barbara Wishengrad, a local midwife. Her purpose was to provide herbal formulas for her pregnant and birthing clients. Every product was made by hand, then bottled and labeled in a small kitchen. Not much has changed in the making of our products. The formulas are still hand-crafted from beginning to end.

As traditionalists, we prepare our medicine in small batches, apothecarial style, using only wild harvested and organically grown herbs with very few exceptions. Many of the botanicals used in our formulas have been grown on high altitude organic farms or gathered sustainably here in the beautiful Rocky Mountains around us. WishGarden is pleased to support small organic farmers in our region and strives to locally source as many of our herbs as possible.

When Catherine Hunziker, a senior professional herbalist and educator, took over ownership of the company 1987, she expanded the reach of these products by developing formulas that met the needs of entire families; men, women and children. This was all happening at the beginning of what became an herbal renaissance in the United States and WishGarden was a founding partner.

We began as a mail order business, before health food stores existed, and were a valued resource for people who wanted to live a more health conscious, self-reliant and organic lifestyle. In addition to the many people who were exploring and learning how to use natural alternatives, there were others who completely depended on herbal medicine in their daily lives and practices, such as practicing midwifes and naturopathic doctors, rural Amish communities, post-modern back-to-the-landers and many, many more.

Since these beginnings, and throughout the maturing of herbalism and natural products, we have continued to grow and evolve. In the early 2000's we began offering our wide range of remedies through major natural products retailers such as Whole Foods Market, Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacies, Vitamin Cottage and more. We stepped into local markets nationwide with a new look and unique labels. Our interesting and self-explanatory labels easily direct the reader, whether practiced or brand new to herbs, to exactly the right remedy in the midst of the confusing sea of products on the shelf. 

WishGarden has a reputation of having a formula for whatever ails you. As a 25 year old company with a wide range of customers over the years, we are continually adapting to changing needs... For example, our best selling Respiratory/Immune line has products for the first signs of a cold, the middle of a cold and for colds that linger. This is one of the ways in which we stand apart from other tincture companies. 

We also excel in the area of herbal symptom relief. You will be amazed how quickly and completely our symptom relieving remedies such as Allergy Relief, Serious Relaxer and Cramp Relief work, to name just a few.  

Our owner and formulator, Catherine, has a reputation for remarkably effective and reliable, one-of-a-kind combinations. She starts with a solid therapeutic assessment of the formulation goals and chooses a number of candidate herbs. From there she moves beyond the cut and dried academic to a creative place of feeling into the attributes and sensibilities of the plants, their personalities, and how they might best work together, their compatibility quotient if you like. This results in a truly integrated and artful combination that accomplishes its therapeautic goals and more, with an emphatic YES!

Again, drawing on the grassroots history of WishGarden, most of the formulas now offered grew out of the practical and real needs of our families, especially the Children's remedies.
